Points Master - comments on a Floorball Phone App

The IFF recently released the FREE app Pointsmaster for Floorball.

Pointsmaster is in itself an idea from Finland that recreational groups or schools can use as you play with a smaller number of players. The main idea is that you play many short games to just a few goals (often with small nets) and you constantly mix the team players. The basic function with Pointsmaster is to keep track of teams results and also who plays for what team to this way finally come up with a way to rank the players and see who was best...
The main point is to make the game fun beyond the scoring and provide points to the players.
From this perspective Pointsmaster is a brilliant idea and there is nothing saying that points master only could be used for Floorball. In our opinion Pointsmaster may be used for Basketball, Futsal/Soccer, Icehockey or any kind of similar pick-up game with a handful of players.

The app from IFF has however a solution focused on Floorball - where 4 goals difference is a main game divider and this feature indeed mean that Basketball would be trickier to play with this specific app since scoring is so frequent in Basketball.

Then even if the intention with Pointsmaster is to make the play more fun - there is also the back draw that by using this tool - not only the best player will be exposed but also the weaker player. So if you use Pointsmaster, either the app or the idea on a piece of paper, be careful if you play with kids - since the main idea must be to keep them in the game. Careful here means do not only use pointsmaster also play other games or drills too.
We also have a slight feeling that Pointsmaster is a bit focused on order from the coach/teacher - the information presented may appear a bit naked - if now one or two players are weaker players. But with a small group of players performing roughly at the same level then indeed Pointsmaster can be a fun addition and a very useful tool.

The execution of Pointsmaster as in this app is good even if we do not think it is a killer app. We think the idea of 4 goals difference as a main cut in the scoring is a little bit too fixed and maybe this feature should have been easily adjustable?

Our recommendation - try this out - it is free - and it can indeed be fun. Out of 5 possible Floorball balls we give the Pointsmaster app 3 Floorball balls!

Research suggest that eye-injuries are more common in Floorball as compared to Tennis, but less common as compared to Squash (similar to Racquetball).
To minimize this risk of injury Floorballcentral recommend: Use certified protective eye-wear (mandated in many European areas for the youth). Do not lay down on the court. Follow the rules strict on stick height.
