Pickleball as seen by a Floorball player

Pickleball is fully fantastic.. Wow.

Balls pictured on this image - A modern Floorball Ball from Salming in front. An indoor Pickleball with smaller holes in orange and an indoor Pickleball in white - well that happens to be a fully proper Floorball ball too (but on the very lowest end of the quality scale)

Ok let us first discuss the Ball:
The regular Ball used in Pickleball is a twisted version of the Ball we use in Floorball. It has some sort of a harder and more slick plastics used and they have 40 holes in the ball and these holes are smaller than the holes in a Floorball ball.
Then they have an indoor version of the ball too - and believe me or not - that is the exact Floorball ball again... With 26 holes, same pattern, same size, same weight and same sort of plastic compound - yes, with a more slightly oily surface feel to the ball. The colors they use is not too far off from Floorball colors - mainly yellow and orange in some pale versions... The indoor ball used in Pickleball appears in quality to be beyond the cheapest Floorball ball you can possibly find on the market. Let us return to the Ball matter in a heartbeat - see below...
But wow, Mr. Clinton V. Carlson the ball you invented in Minnesota - will truly change sports as we know em'.

Gameplay:
It is super slow compared to both Table-tennis, Squash, Badminton and Tennis - but it is a big mix of them all - shown at slow motion - and then feel that you stand on the table tennis table or something in just exciting... This is also what makes it so utterly intriguing. It seems like the sport just came out from kindergarten and the possibilities to develop this into a really good game - in our minds - well - its just staggering...
Then this also feels very modern and fresh - not like an old version of lawn tennis from imperial England - this is plastics... this is now - this is pulse.

Paddles:
You could probably just use a canoe paddle - just cut it off - or to be frank this is a full disaster.
OK, I had the opportunity to use a graphite racket (in instagram above) - but boy - this is like a 3rd world design if not worse and... the air resistance as you swing the paddle feels like 3 cosom blades - with no holes - taped together and anyone working in silicone valley  would just cry seeing this... crazy old school in other words.. only comparable things in the usa as it comes to freshness levels is probably the school buses or the balls used for softball - this is just outdated stuff to start with.

What to do?
Well this can fast be developed very much with a few swift moves.

A) The Floorball Industry should utterly fast try to sell their superior balls as indoor balls to Pickleball organizations. Top Pickleball  players could never deny the more advanced aerodynamic, the stability and the core strength in a Floorball ball- versus what they have today - i.e. all the good features we find in a normal Floorball ball. Yes we also think about the more advanced plastic mixtures as used in Floorball.
But we have another twist to this too - maybe Floorball should develop an outdoor ball - that possibly would resemble the ball used by the sport Pickleball? Their ball is not as sensitive to hard winds as a regular Floorball ball...is. That seems to be a clever idea for outdoor Floorball?

B) Jolly that invented the first Floorball stick with a ventilated blade should design a Pickleball paddle with airflow - like now. An open ventilated paddle will fully reinvent Pickleball - and if the rules will not allow it - heck then it is time to create outlaw Pickleball. Then curve the paddle a bit and take this rudimentary design into this century... The paddle used in Pickleball is a true disaster... for now.

C) Floorball players should pick up Pickleball for off season training. If they do - and play a couple of days per week during the summer - well we promise they could easily come to the USA and become US American Pickleball champs... It is the same ball for heavens sake... And if the Swedish ATP Tennis team could play even with the top Floorball guys in Sweden like 30 years ago - then we think Top Notch Floorballers can give any top Pickleball player a good run for their money..

D) We know that the spin on a floorball ball is used during game play to curve shots - with more advanced rackets - a better ball with other plastic mixtures and aerodynamic features - Pickleball will become a world success story - we think. Gameplay with increased spin on the ball must be developed with both more friction between the ball paddle and the surface played on.

Pickleball is for sure a sport for the future - and the possibilities to develop game-play is out of this world.

Yes - we plan to play this again...

Caution

Research suggest that eye-injuries are more common in Floorball as compared to Tennis, but less common as compared to Squash (similar to Racquetball).
To minimize this risk of injury Floorballcentral recommend: Use certified protective eye-wear (mandated in many European areas for the youth). Do not lay down on the court. Follow the rules strict on stick height.
