Grand Master of the Plastics?

Maslow - linked in via http://www.kernelmag.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/maslow.jpg

So, what is the higher purpose of doing your sport?

If we would ask Asians in traditional sports - like old fashioned Judo and Karate etcetera - we are certain that the grand masters would have a rather clear answer to that question (or maybe we just have seen the Karate Kid movie too many times?). The answer would most likely be something in line with religious undertones aiming, with a larger likelihood, in the direction of Maslows top level of Self-Actualization.

If we would ask that same question on the higher purpose to people in more traditional westerner advanced sports like Soccer or American Football etc - we are not certain that the answer would come out full as deep and thoughtful. We could seriously be wrong here since this is a speculation  but probably a good one.

What about Floorball?

Let’s try to figure this out. First we at Floorballcentral.org thinks that the #LTAD movement - when they state that winning is not the main thing but to keep kids in sports and try to become better at a sport is a far better motivator - these ideas and other thoughts within the #LTAD school leads, according to us, - in a better direction - (compared to what we have heard from other sources on the subject of modern sports - well we have not heard too much at all on the subject of the real and higher purpose in more modern sports).

Then let’s ask some provocative questions. Is the purpose with Floorball to win? We say most likely not - it is only a partial goal on the road to the fuller purpose. Is the higher purpose with Floorball to make money? Most likely not - but money must support the infrastructure to keep higher objectives in place. Is the purpose to get leaders, like coaches, club presidents or federation presidents? Same thing again, that is not the higher purpose - just a part of the supporting infrastructure.

So what is then the higher purpose of Floorball?

Take that question on your own - dribble with it and shoot it around a few times in your mind.

Floorballcentral dares to guess that the answer is perhaps not a solid general answer. We also suspect that there might be several personal reasons for the higher purpose, like basic fun, health, comradery and so on.
But our conclusion is that we do envy some of the old Asians line of thoughts -  about the higher purpose of a sport or activity that touch many people. And in all honestly it would be - most likely a good thing if the Floorball community could figure out some sort of higher purpose - or at least it would sound good.

Then of course - as you after a life long endeavour in Floorball - are able to figure out the larger purpose in some mystical way - hey put on a black belt and call yourself;
The Grand Master of the Plastics - or GMP for short.

Research suggest that eye-injuries are more common in Floorball as compared to Tennis, but less common as compared to Squash (similar to Racquetball).
To minimize this risk of injury Floorballcentral recommend: Use certified protective eye-wear (mandated in many European areas for the youth). Do not lay down on the court. Follow the rules strict on stick height.
